State Government closes Cooktown maternity services

Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates

The State Government has closed maternity services in Cooktown.

The Opposition has been contacted by several locals expressing their disbelief.

It means expectant mothers must now travel to Mareeba or Cairns to give birth.

That is a three or four hour drive.

I’m calling on the State Government to immediately reverse this decision.

All Queenslanders deserve a world-class health system no matter where they live.

The State Government has a shocking record with closing regional maternity services in regional Queensland.

It was the former LNP Government that announced the reopening of Cooktown maternity services in 2014.

The State Government is losing control of the health system and must explain the reasons behind this decision.

When will the Labor Member for Cook start fighting for her electorate?
