End the uncertainty for Spanish Mackerel fishers

Shadow Fisheries Minister Tony Perrett

The State Government must end the uncertainty for Spanish mackerel fishers.

Recreational and commercial fishers are rightly concerned about the possible closure or reduction in the Spanish mackerel fishery.

The government must be transparent around stock assessments and how that data is collected.

The effects of a reduction or closure of the Spanish mackerel fishery would be devastating for fishers and for small and family businesses.

No one in the industry supports unsustainable fishing.

But these fishers deserve the truth on how data is collected to inform the decisions being made by the government.

I’ve asked the Agriculture Minister to detail information on data collection, stock assessments and the results of its modelling.

The Minister must provide the data used to justify its decisions.
